On January 28, 2017 the annual Walk for Life was held in Spokane. According to the Spokesman Review between 800 and 1000 people attended the annual Walk for Life Northwest. A small group representing St. Mary Presentation was in attendance. Unfortunately there were several other events taking place that same day. (See story below.) Thank you Marty Grieshaber for these images.
Our Lady of Angels Secular Franciscans in Deer Park
The Roman Catholic Church, specifically St. Mary Presentation Parish has a history in the Deer Park area going back more than 100 years. In 1912 Mass was celebrated for the first time in the newly completed church of St. Mary Presentation. Jesuit priests from Gonzaga served the church until 1916.
In 1916, the Deer Park Mission was founded and served by the Franciscan Friars. The priests drove to Deer Park each weekend from the Franciscan Residence in Spokane
February 1, 1951, a separate Franciscan parish was established, and the then current Franciscan Friar from Spokane, Fr. Roger Agostinelli, OFM, became the parish priest.
In the Fall of 2011 Professed members and Candidates met with a vision that a Secular Franciscan Fraternity was needed in Deer Park for the counties north of Spokane. These secular Franciscans were formed and professed in the Secular Franciscan Fraternity, St. Francis, Spokane. With their support and initiative, plus our prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit they had the confidence to persevere in their vision and mission. They would like to thank the Pastors, Father Al Grasher, Father Kevin Oiland and the parishioners of St. Mary Presentation Church for their warm acceptance and support.
The Activation Ritual, which took place on January 28,2017, was presided over by Sr. Loretta Schaff, OSF, RCSA Spiritual Assistant of the Secular Franciscan Region of the Troubadours of Peace. Also in attendance from the Region were Bob Fitzsimmons, OFS Regional Minister, B.J. Christensen, OFS Regional Formation Director, Dennis Daniel, OFS Regional Treasurer, Patricia Naughton, OFS Regional Councilor.
